Italians living abroad can now apply for the CIE at any Comune in Italy
The Electronic Identity Card, known as CIE, is one of the most important documents for Italian citizens. It serves as an official identification document and facilitates access to public services, while also representing the citizen’s identity before Italian authorities.
Since June 1, 2026, Italian citizens registered with AIRE have had a new possibility: applying for the CIE directly at any Italian Comune, in addition to the option already available through consulates. This change expands access to the document and may make life easier for those who live abroad but travel to Italy frequently.
To apply, it is usually necessary to be an Italian citizen, be registered with AIRE, keep personal records updated, have regular documentation and, in the case of citizens born outside Italy, have the birth record transcribed in the competent Italian Comune. Since each case may have specific requirements, it is important to check in advance what is required by the chosen Comune.
This new option represents a major advantage for Italians living abroad, especially for those who will be in Italy for a period and want to use the trip to regularize or update their documents. Italian citizenship goes beyond recognition: keeping documents up to date is a way to fully exercise rights, access services and strengthen the bond with Italy.
