Italians abroad: do you know all your rights?
Being an Italian citizen goes far beyond holding a European passport. Even while living outside Italy, citizens retain a range of legal rights, including access to documents, political participation, and public services. However, many Italians living abroad are still unaware of the full extent of these benefits.
Among the main rights is the ability to apply for an Italian passport through the consulate, as well as obtain an Italian identity card. Another key right is voting, which can be exercised remotely by mail, allowing citizens to participate in national elections even while living abroad.
Italian citizenship can also be passed on to children, preserving family ties across generations. In addition, Italian citizens have the right to live, study, and work in any European Union country, opening doors to broader professional and academic opportunities. Italian consulates also provide essential support and assistance to citizens abroad.
Citizens can also register civil acts such as births and marriages in Italy and have the right to return and establish residence at any time. Once residing in Italy, they gain access to the public healthcare system, reinforcing the country’s social protections.
