CIE strengthens rights for Italians abroad
Italians living outside Italy now have greater access to essential citizenship documents. Citizens residing abroad will be able to request the CIE — Electronic Identity Card, directly in Italy, even if they are registered in AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad).
The CIE is the official Italian identity document and has a high level of digital security. In addition to serving as national identification, it is also valid throughout the European Union, allowing greater mobility and access to public and digital services provided by the Italian State.
The possibility of issuing the CIE for Italians living abroad represents an important step for the Italian diaspora. The measure strengthens the legal bond between citizens and the Italian State, expanding autonomy and access to rights.
More than a document, Italian citizenship represents belonging, identity and active participation. With initiatives like this, Italians around the world maintain their institutional and cultural connection with Italy regardless of where they live.
